On Friday October 5, ITS Ireland held its annual industry conference at the picturesque Lyrath Hotel in Kilkenny.
Dovetail operated a stand at the event and we met lots of clients, colleagues and friends new and old.
This year's conference anticipates next year's big ticket event, the 2013 ITS European Conference which will be held in the Convention Centre in Dublin. We hope to see everyone again there.
Special thanks to ButtonBox for their fantastic service, getting Dovetail dressed up for the event.
We were delighted to be shortlisted for the inaugral ITS Ireland Excellence Awards 2012. The nominated project was Rennicks Data, a web-based application that allows the owners of trafficmonitoring smart-signs to remotely access the data gathered by their signs.
There are some screenshots here of the application. But for this story I'm including a picture Ross Shannon from hittheroad.ie. HitTheRoad and Dovetail were sitting at the same table that night, and this is a picture of Ross being presented with our, I mean, the award... well done guys, and thanks for a fun night!

well) organised by Cathy Holohan of Enterprise
A delegation of eighteen members from Indonesia visited Ireland.
Over the course of four days they visited various Irish companies
involved in transport, including two Dovetail customers: Dublin Bus and
LUAS. We were
delighted to be invited to meet the delegation and talk them
through the services we provide.
Scotland-based GiftVoucherSolutions has launched a new mobile solution for its clients. Providing gift vouchers to the hospitality sector in the UK and Ireland, GiftVoucherSolutions can now offer its clients the option of redeeming vouchers on Androids and iPhone/iPad terminals. This Dovetail-supplied add-on to its existing systems uses 3D barcodes (QR Codes) and a touch-oriented browser-based implementation.

I get a little nervous updating the firmware on my phone because
I don't really trust it. It makes me wonder how the NASA

We recently came across an issue on a customer website where a
photo appeared correctly on most browsers, but was rotated ninety
degrees when viewed on the iPad. The photo even showed up correctly
on the Windows version of Safari.
This was puzzling us; why would one browser decide to rotate a
photo when all others displayed the same photo correctly?
On further investigation, we discovered that this was because of
the EXIF metadata stored in the photo. The camera,
when taking the photo, saved its rotate setting for the photo in
the EXIF metadata, and the iPad browser was just applying this
So the simple solution is to remove the EXIF metadata from the photo. This
can be done using an application such as IfranView, or an image
compression website such as PunyPNG. We used PunyPNG, and the
reduced image now displays perfectly on the iPad.
